Health Conditions Linked to Pollution Exposure
At CleanRecoveryAct.com, we maintain a regularly updated list of illnesses that have been scientifically linked to pollution exposure. Even if you’re not considered a “Sensitive Individual,” air, water, and soil pollution can still harm your health—often gradually and silently over time.
Pollution Affects Everyone
While those with asthma, COPD, heart disease, or compromised immune systems may feel the effects more immediately, everyone is at risk. Long-term exposure to toxic chemicals—often released nightly from factories, refineries, and other industrial sites—can lead to serious health problems, even in otherwise healthy individuals.
Illnesses Linked to Pollution
This is not a complete list. It is reviewed and updated quarterly based on the latest research and medical literature:
-
Asthma & Respiratory Illness
-
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
-
Lung Cancer
-
Heart Disease & Stroke
-
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
-
Hormone Disruption
-
Infertility
-
Neurological Disorders (including Parkinson’s & MS)
-
ADHD & Autism Spectrum Disorders
-
Migraines
-
Anxiety & Depression
-
Autoimmune Conditions
-
Skin Conditions (eczema, psoriasis)
-
Endocrine Disruption
-
Kidney & Liver Damage
-
Increased Risk of Alzheimer’s & Dementia
Pollutants such as benzene, formaldehyde, lead, arsenic, PFAS, and particulate matter (PM2.5) are just a few of the substances linked to these and other health conditions.

Prevention Starts With Awareness
If you wake up tired, have chronic inflammation, or unexplained symptoms, it may not be “just stress.” Environmental toxins could be playing a role—especially if you live within 10 miles of a factory, airport, golf course, or major freeway.

Air Pollution Deaths: Air pollution accounted for 8.1 million deaths globally in 2021, becoming the second leading risk factor for death StateofglobalairHealtheffects. More than 90 percent of these global air pollution deaths – 7.8 million people – are attributed to PM2.5 air pollution Air pollution accounted for 8.1 million deaths globally in 2021, becoming the second leading risk factor for death, including for children under five years.
Water Pollution Deaths: Microbiologically contaminated drinking water is estimated to cause approximately 505,000 diarrheal deaths each year Drinking-water. However, unsafe water is responsible for more than a million deaths each year Clean Water – Our World in Data when including all water-related diseases.
Total Pollution Deaths: Pollution remains responsible for approximately 9 million deaths per year, corresponding to one in six deaths worldwide Pollution and health: a progress update – The Lancet Planetary Health. This comprehensive figure includes both air and water pollution along with other forms of environmental contamination.
Breakdown by Age: In 2021, more than 700,000 deaths in children under 5 years were linked to air pollution, meaning that every day almost 2,000 children under 5 years die because of health impacts linked to air pollution State of global air 2024 | Children’s Environmental Health Collaborative.
The 9 million annual deaths represent the most current and comprehensive estimate for all pollution-related deaths globally, which encompasses the illnesses I listed earlier. Air pollution contributes the largest share at around 8.1 million deaths, while water pollution and other environmental factors account for the remaining deaths in this total.
