Key Findings from the Report
- 100 fossil fuel producers accounted for 71% of global industrial greenhouse gas emissions since 1988
- The database covers 923 gigatonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions from 1854-2015
- 25 corporate and state producing entities account for 51% of global industrial GHG emissions since 1988
- Scope 3 emissions (from use of sold products) account for 90% of total company emissions
- State-owned companies are linked to 59% of emissions, while investor-owned companies account for 41%
Producer Categories
The 100 producers consist of:
- 41 public investor-owned companies
- 16 private investor-owned companies
- 36 state-owned companies
- 7 state producers (represented by national production)
Methodology Note
The report tracks both:
- Scope 1 emissions: Direct operational emissions from fuel consumption, flaring, and methane releases
- Scope 3 emissions: Indirect emissions from the downstream combustion of sold coal, oil, and gas products
This represents the most comprehensive database of company-level greenhouse gas emissions attributable to fossil fuel producers from 1854-2015.
